Homeowners insurance and dogs
If you have a large dog, and even more specifically, a dog on the insurance "bad dog" list, then you'll know that it's hard or almost impossible to get homeowners insurance because of the liability issues.
One of the women in our office has just adopted a young Rottweiler, Tallulah (she is in the picture and completely adorable - I saw the video :) ), and I asked her about her homeowner's insurance, hoping she'd thought about it before her family expansion. I'd hate for her to adopt a Rottweiler and then find she had no home insurance as a result.
I should have guessed she is on the ball though (we only hire smart people around here), and she told me that her insurer, State Farm, is one of the few insurers that do not have a breed specific policy. In most states, all breeds are considered innocent until the first bite.
Do you know of any other insurers that are particular good or bad to deal with for dog parents?
Update 1: we've since heard that in Ohio at least, State Farm does exclude 5 breeds and a mix of one or more of these breeds. Namely:
- Pit Bull
- Staffordshire Bull Terrier
- American Staffordshire Terrier
- American Pit Bull Terrier
- American Bulldog Terrier
Update 2: an agent at Farmer’s Insurance confirmed that Rottweilers and Pit Bulls are covered under their policies in Ohio.
